However, due to the global spread of COVID-19, we are in a situation which we can’t act as usual.Through this project, we would like to let all of you know about our activities as the Student Union International Department, about the history of Soka University, the founder, and also about the great hopes from the founder and the international guests.
The International Department is composed of seven unique members from 48th batch students. We have fulfilling days. In this time, we are going to introduce our activities and our theme!
〈International Guests Reception〉
In Soka University, the students are in charge of giving receptions to international guests, as the representative of the founder. The reason for that is because the founder believes that students can grow as very talented persons by meeting and getting contact with the guests who are persons with first-class character and behavior.
We also receive a lot of incentives from the international guests. One of them, the Cagayan Capitol University president, said that Soka University students have an overflowing happiness expression and a really smart and tidy look. Also, he added that he believes Soka University students are a big hope.
〈The Exchange Meeting with SUA〉
Last year, we held the exchange meeting of about 3 hours duration with students from SUA (Soka University of America) in the beginning of July. The theme was “Hishyo (Taking a flight) ~Let’s start from here from now~”. The preparation and organization of the event were all done by the International Department.。
This year (2020) is the 11th anniversary of the exchange meeting. We are planning the contents and gifts for the participants with our originality. We hope this event will be a great opportunity for both Soka University and SUA students to get along and have new friendships!
〈Annual Theme of the International Department〉
”Be the Value Creator Winners who will Light up the World!”
This year is very important for Soka University, and we are feeling a firm sense of mission. Thus, we believe we must challenge a lot and get united in order to achieve the victory which will mark the 50th anniversary of the university.
With this theme in mind, we have the will of spreading our friendships from where we are and set off a wave to world peace!
〈What is the Soka Friendship Award?〉
The Soka Friendship Award is an award given to the guests who come to Soka University when we are giving the reception. It’s an award presented to a person who has a noble life which can be of encouragement to the students to put the Soka University’s mission statements in practice.
※This is the actual Soka Friendship Award.
〈The history of Soka Friendship Award〉
1993In February of 1993, when the founder visited South America, the “Bolivia Youth Friendship Award” from the students of Saracho University and Del Valle University at Bolivia. This award implies “the most respected friend by the youth of Bolivia”.。
The founder was really pleased and then suggested Soka University to start a similar project.
The Student Union president of that time put it in discussion on the agenda of the annual Student assembly. He called attention to starting a project which students can welcome the international guests and also strengthen the friendship relation between the university and the guests by themselves. The Soka Friendship Award creation was decided with unanimity.
〈The first Soka Friendship Award〉
On April 24th, 1993, the President Gorbachev, who was the last leader of Soviet Union, visited Soka University and the first Soka Friendship Award was presented to him. He had achieved to end the Cold War and created new history. Because of that, the vast majority of students agreed in presenting it to him at the general meeting of representatives.
About that, the founder commented “The guest will surely be pleased. Please dedicate your best on it because it is a new history.” During the reception, the founder suggested that the best timing for giving would be in the climax of the ceremony after the lecture.
〈About the shield〉
We also make and present the shield together with the Soka Friendship Award. The box of shield is designed utilizing a Japanese traditional paper which matches for each country of international guests.
